Cent Auctions: The Retro Fundraiser Making a Comeback 🎟️

Cent auctions are back in vogue and it's easy to see why. They're simple to run, fun for all ages, and a great way to turn a table full of small prizes into a decent fundraiser.

Here’s how it works:
Supporters buy a sheet of tickets. Each sheet has 100 tickets with the same number, plus a matching stub they keep for reference. They then “bid” by tearing off the numbered tickets and placing as many as they like into boxes sitting next to the prizes they’re keen to win. The more tickets they put in, the better their chances! One ticket is drawn per box, just like a mini raffle.

Why It Works

Cent auctions are all about variety and fun. They’re great for offering lots of smaller prizes (and a few bigger ones too). Ticket sheets are usually sold for $1 each - hence the name “cent” auction - and because people often buy multiple sheets, things can really add up.

They’re also a fantastic way to keep the buzz going at fetes, open days, and presentation events. Many groups run draws throughout the day, starting with smaller items and finishing with a showstopper prize.

Tips for Cent Auction Success

✔️ Offer a wide range of prizes - something for every age and interest.
✔️ Present prizes nicely - use baskets, hampers or gift boxes to bundle items.
✔️ Distribute flyers - include prize details and rough draw times to build excitement.
✔️ Keep energy up - a cheerful MC or auctioneer can do wonders.
✔️ Give regular reminders - call out prize draws to keep the momentum going.

Want to make your prize table really pop? Try grouping smaller items into themed hampers - think movie night, pamper packs, or sports-themed bundles. (Check out our article on Themed Hampers for inspiration.)

Whether you’re running a school fete, club fundraiser or end-of-year celebration, a cent auction is a crowd-pleasing way to bring in funds and a whole lot of fun along the way!
