Today’s tip, about themed gift hampers as auction/ raffle prizes, was prompted by a reader questions about challenges with a silent auction:
We’re having trouble with prizes for our silent auction. For years a dad at our school always managed to get big-ticket items sourced because he was well connected. Things like celebrity chef dinner parties, signed rugby jerseys, training sessions with sports stars. This year he isn’t at the school anymore and we haven’t got anything great – it’s really stressing the mum in charge of the silent auction stall! Do we buy stuff to auction off?
Firstly, if you were lucky enough to have had a Mr Well-Connected-Former-Dad on your team, don’t be afraid to give him a ring and see if he’s happy to pass on some contacts. Chances are he still has a soft spot for the school and might be happy to help out behind the scenes.
But if that door is closed (or awkward to knock on), don’t stress. There’s a solid Plan B—and it comes wrapped in cellophane and tied with a bow: themed gift hampers.
If you don’t have big-ticket items, go wide instead of high. Themed raffle hampers are crowd-pleasers that can bring in solid funds and work beautifully in a silent auction or a cent auction format.
Here are just a few school raffle hamper ideas to get your wheels turning:
Camping Adventure
Gardening Goodies
Chocolate Lover’s Dream
Baking Basket
Women’s or Men’s Pamper Pack
BBQ Bonanza
Toddler Time
Baby Shower in a Box
Crafty Delights
Travel Essentials
Mega Gift Card Bundle
Beach Day
Sporty Stuff (boys, girls, or general)
Salted Caramel Everything (or is that just us?)
Feeling fancy? Add a colour theme – a Red Basket or Sunshine Yellow Hamper – for something eye-catching.
A great way to tackle this is to assign one theme per class or year level. Ask each family to donate an item worth $5–$20. Someone might even offer to donate the basket and wrapping. You’ll end up with a collection of hampers that look fab and appeal to all tastes.
These can be raffled, auctioned, or used in a cent auction (where people buy tickets and pop them into the box in front of the hamper they most want to win). It’s a fun and low-pressure way to raise funds and generate buzz at your event.
Chances are you’ve got leftover goodies from earlier fundraisers—Mother’s Day stalls, Christmas raffles, and generous local businesses. Keep a spreadsheet of what you’ve got, then mix and match to create new hampers. Don’t forget the old faithful: the Mystery Hamper wrapped up tight and full of surprises!
💡 Pro tip: If a parent has said, “I can’t volunteer, but I’d love to help somehow,” this is the time to ask if they’d be happy to donate a bottle of wine, a movie voucher, or some gourmet goodies to help top up a hamper or two.
The takeaway? Don’t panic if your silent auction is looking a little bare this year. With a bit of creativity and some community help, themed hampers can turn into real fundraising winners – whether you’re running a school fete, trivia night, or end-of-year celebration.
