Set a goal

I bet you're thinking that the first step to organising a successful fundraiser is to set a date, right? Wrong! The initial and most crucial step is to establish a clear and specific goal for your event. If you're struggling with this, I highly recommend checking out the strategic planning chapters in my first book: The Practical Fundraising Handbook for School and Club Volunteers.

Setting a tangible or visible target can be the driving force behind your fete, acting as a constant reminder and motivation for everyone involved. One ingenious fete coordinator from Victoria took the initiative to create a large, black and white sign displaying their goal and placed it in a prominent location months before the event. The sign featured an image of the proposed playground they aimed to build with the funds raised. As the event drew closer and they raised more money, they gradually filled in parts of the playground illustration with colour to show their progress toward the goal!

It's essential to choose a goal that will benefit as many people as possible and resonate with your community. To spark your creativity, here are some of the most popular school fundraising goals:

  • Classroom equipment
  • Library books
  • Playground equipment
  • Sporting equipment
  • School vegetable garden
  • School camps/trips
  • Music equipment
  • Chaplaincy
  • Landscaping/outdoor learning spaces
  • Helping others

When you share your goal with the community, it fosters a sense of ownership and investment in the project. People are more likely to lend a hand or donate if they know exactly where their money is going and can see the tangible benefits it will provide.

Incorporate images and reminders of your goal into your promotional materials leading up to the fete. This will ensure that the community stays engaged and excited about the project. On the day of the event, use these visual aids to encourage further donations by reminding attendees of the target. People are often more motivated to contribute a little extra when they see how close you are to reaching your goal.

By clearly defining your goal and keeping it at the forefront of your event, you create a sense of purpose and unity among your community, ultimately leading to a more successful and impactful fundraiser. Remember, a well-defined goal is the cornerstone of any effective fundraising campaign!
