Spread the Word – Communication is Key

If you want to supercharge your fundraising efforts, you need to spread the word! The more people who know about your cause, the better.

Build Your Fundraising Buzz

1. Create a Facebook Page
Set up a dedicated page for your fundraiser and make it easy for people to follow along. Share updates, stories, and photos. Pin key details to the top so new visitors can get up to speed quickly. Link to this page from your school or club’s website.

2. Announce It on Your Website
Your school, club, or community group’s website is prime real estate for spreading the word. Post a ‘Coming Soon’ notice and keep it updated with new event details.

3. Tap Into Your Networks
If you’re fundraising as an individual, think about all the groups you’re involved with—your sports club, church, or workplace. Ask if they’d be willing to share your fundraiser on their social media or newsletters.

4. Posters, Posters, Posters!
Print eye-catching posters and put them everywhere: community boards, classroom doors, school entrances, the office, canteen, library, and even the adults’ toilets (we all know people will stop and read there!).

5. Use Your Group’s Database
If your school, club, or workplace has a database, send an email blast. Keep it short and engaging, and include a clear call to action (e.g., “Click here to donate” or “Join us for the fundraiser event”).

Maximise Your Reach

The Practical Fundraising Handbook lays out the best ways to spread the word:

  • Establish a Blog or Facebook Page: This keeps all your updates in one place.
  • Share Your Goal and Why It Matters: People are more likely to support a cause they connect with.
  • Highlight the Benefits: How will your fundraiser impact others?
  • Use Powerful Images & Videos: Emotive storytelling drives engagement.
  • Post Fundraising Event Updates: Keep excitement levels high!
  • Show Progress: A visual tally of how close you are to your goal makes a huge difference.
  • Celebrate & Thank Supporters: Businesses and individuals love recognition.
  • Keep the Journey Going: If your fundraiser is for a trip or experience, share updates when you reach your goal and beyond!

Expand Your Audience

  • Email Everyone: Friends, family, workmates—invite them to follow and share your fundraiser.
  • Engage the Media: Weekly newspapers and local radio stations love a good story! Find a unique ‘hook’—are you the first in your community to do this? Are you taking on a wild challenge? Get their attention and keep them updated.
  • Ask Local Businesses to Help: Many will happily display a poster or donate.
  • Reach Out to Community Groups: Rotary, Lions, Zonta, or Country Women’s Association may invite you to speak at an event about your cause.
  • Use Video to Boost Donations: Crowdfunding campaigns with a short, engaging video are far more likely to succeed than those with just text and images. People connect with stories, so let them see your passion in action!

The key to successful fundraising? Keep talking about it! The more people who hear your message, the more support you’ll receive. So get out there and spread the word—your cause deserves it!
